Capacity Building & Business Development Services Unit
The CBBDS Unit aims to build the capacity of individuals,
institutions and cooperatives by providing businesses with
managerial and technical training services, consultancies,
referrals and other services as related to community needs.
Through JRF’s involvement in local communities, it became
evident that capacity building is a crucial component to
development initiatives and for the long-term sustainability
of projects. Therefore, JRF incorporates capacity building
activities from the onset of project design through final
implementation. Since CBBDS establishment in 1999, a total
number of 5,064 persons - 809 men, 1,675 women, and 2,580
benefited from training and short business management
sessions. The CBBDS areas of expertise are as follows:
Community Mobilization
The objective of community mobilization is to encourage the
initiative of community members and effective participation
of the targeted community regarding needs determination,
prioritization, design and project implementation through
various activities and tools selected according to the local
community nature and needs.
Improving Local Community Efficiency In Project
Management
Since all our interventions require a percentage of
community contributions, either in-kind or financial, this
activity encourages the importance of local community
contributions, while also cultivating their abilities to
implement and manage projects successfully. Topics focus on
the tendering process and phases, purchasing criteria,
project management, team building, planning, evaluation and
follow-up of projects.
Business Development Services
Business development services aim to build the capacity of
entrepreneurs (business owners, start-ups and managers) and
provide the necessary business management skills and
knowledge to enable them to start and improve their
businesses. The training focuses on preparing feasibility
studies, market research, marketing plans, costing,
bookkeeping and planning. This is in addition to providing
special technical training and guidance to identify new
business opportunities.

Municipality Planning Committees

The Youth Career Initiative
(YCI)
The Youth Career Initiative (YCI) is an
educational program that enables international hotels to
provide a five to six months training for both high
school graduates and dropouts from disadvantaged
backgrounds. The program is designed to empower young
people by providing them necessary life and
employability skills which they need to have better
options and choices to make in their lives. YCI programs
are mainly conducted by hotel management teams and
combine both theoretical and practical instruction
including, instruction in personal finance,
interpersonal skills, personal health and wellbeing. It
also exposes participants to a successful business
environment and a wide variety of workplace situations.
YCI aims to give participants a unique opportunity to
improve their long-term social and economic prospects
through professional education and experience. Through
YCI, young people can enhance their potential, gain
self-esteem and develop the ability to make better
decisions concerning their future.
How does it work?
Each
program is tailored to suit the country and the need of
its youth. Each country's program is managed by the its
local Youth Career Council consisting of Hotels' General
Managers, NGOs, a member of the Education Board and
other related parties.
Appropriate applicants, ages between 18 to 22 years old,
are selected based on specific criteria and are
identified by the local partner in each country. Once
the program starts, hotel managers carry out the
program’s daily activities in a nurturing atmosphere and
act as mentors to the participants. Moreover,
participants receive English language and Computer
courses to enrich the overall theoretical component of
the program. After training, participants are assisted
and monitored to ensure they make a good choice
concerning their careers.
YCI Jordan
In Jordan, YCI has been ongoing for three
years. In first year the program hosted 13 participants
in three five stars hotels in Amman; The Marriott
Hotel-Amman, The Sheraton Al Nabil Hotel and Towers, and
the Four Seasons Hotel- Amman Hotel. The following year
included the same three hotels hosting 15 participants.
2009- 2010 year achieved several milestones; the program
included a forth hotel, Hayatt Amman, 20 participants
including one female for the first time. Participants
experienced working in different departments at the
hotels, received English and Computer skills at LRN2B
center in Amman, soft skills training by JRF’s partner
Jordan Career Education Foundation and team building
activities by Challenger team. As the local partner in
Jordan, JRF played the coordinating role between YCI
management in the UK, hotels, participants and other
partners to ensure a proper implementation of the
program towards success. King Abdullah II Fund for
Development supported the program for the 2nd year in a
row by partially funding the implementation of the
program.
Moving Forward
YCI is determined to include more hotels in Amman and
outside it in the years to come targeting tourism hot
spots in Jordan such as the Dead Sea, Petra and Aqaba
while continuing in Amman.
