The Jordanian Education for Water and Environmental
Leadership (JEWEL)
JEWEL is a
USAID funded project that is implemented by The William
Davidson Institute at the University of Michigan (WDI) –
USA. JRF in partnership with the Frederick A. and Barbara M.
Erb Institute at the University of Michigan; the Center for
Sustainable Global Enterprise (CSGE) at the Cornell
University’s S.C. Johnson Graduate School of Management, the
Jordan University of Science and Technology (JUST) started
implementing the project (2008-2010), aiming at empowering
leadership and decision making, and creating resources and
knowledge networks in Natural Resource Management (NRM) in
Jordan.
In 2008, the
project started by conducting several Natural Resources
Management Workshops were conducted in different
governorates including Ajlun, Balqa’, Mafraq, and Aqaba.
These workshops aimed to raise awareness on sustainable use
of natural resources amongst local communities.They were
attended by representatives of communities who have an
effective and vital role to play in the area such as
farmers, environmental societies, cooperatives, private
sector, parliament members, and school teachers among
others.
In 2009, the workshops were spread to other locations, in
Kufranja, Hashimiya, Fuheis, and Jerash. Moreover, the “1st
International Conference on Integrated Natural Resources
Management in Jordan” was held by jointly by JRF and JUST.
