JRF & Dutch Embassy Launch Blue Economy Project Empowering Youth, Women in Aqaba
In line with its mission to leverage the social and economic well-being of local communities across Jordan, the Jordan River Foundation (JRF) funded by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Jordan announced the launch of a new project in southern Jordan, focusing primarily on Aqaba and its surrounding areas.
The agreement was signed by the Dutch Ambassador to Jordan, Her Excellency Ms. Stella Kloth, and the Director General of the Jordan River Foundation, Ms. Enaam Al-Barrishi. “Advancing Blue Economy Innovation through Civic Engagement and Entrepreneurship” will run for a period of 12 months, and aims to nurture a new generation of entrepreneurs equipped to develop and expand sustainable initiatives designed to conserve marine resources and protect the environment. Its ultimate goal is to foster economic growth, improve livelihoods, and create employment opportunities within the blue economy sector.
“JRF aims through this project to empower 475 youth and women working in early-stage startups,” points Al Barrishi. “The initial phase will include practical training, mentorship, and specialized guidance across targeted sectors, all working toward sustainable solutions that deliver social, economic, and environmental impact within the blue and digital economies.”
The project will also address untapped opportunities within sectors related to the blue economy, including eco-tourism, marine conservation technologies, and smart logistics. An incubation hub will offer business support, innovation services, and guidance to help participants turn ideas into practical and sustainable solutions.
“With this project, we hope to give the youth and women of southern Jordan the support and resources needed to turn their ideas and ambitions into viable businesses. Developing the private sector is one of the Netherlands’ main priorities in Jordan, and empowering young entrepreneurs in the south is essential to unlocking the country’s economic potential,” said Kloth.
Additionally, the Ambassador toured the Queen Rania Al-Abdullah Community Empowerment Center in Aqaba, where she was briefed on the activities and programs implemented by the center to serve the local community in Aqaba and neighboring areas.
